Smoke (protagonizada por Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, Forest Whitaker y Stockard Channing) cuenta la historia de un novelista, un gerente de una tienda de cigarros y un adolescente negro que se cruzan inesperadamente y terminan por cambiar sus vidas de forma indeleble. Ambientado en el contemporáneo Brooklyn, Smoke inspiró directamente a Blue in the Face, una comedia en gran parte improvisada en un total de seis días. Una película como ninguna otra, está protagonizada por Harvey Keitel, con actuaciones de Roseanne, Lily Tomlin, Lou Reed y Michael J. Fox. Lulu on the Bridge (el debut como director solista de Auster, nuevamente protagonizado por Harvey Keitel, con Mira Sorvino, Willem Dafoe y Vanessa Redgrave) se abre con el disparo accidental del músico de jazz Izzy Maurer durante una presentación en un club de Nueva York. Izzy es llevado en un viaje al extraño y a veces aterrador laberinto de su alma. Tanto en el thriller como en el cuento de hadas, Lulu on the Bridge es sobre todo una historia sobre los poderes redentores del amor.
