Lulu on the Bridge (el debut como director solista de Auster, nuevamente protagonizado por Harvey Keitel, con Mira Sorvino, Willem Dafoe y Vanessa Redgrave) se abre con el disparo accidental del músico de jazz Izzy Maurer durante una presentación en un club de Nueva York. Izzy es llevado en un viaje al extraño y a veces aterrador laberinto de su alma.
